I can agree with that, but it's like saying "man, say what you will about Stalin, Soviet-era music is pretty dope.".

It's the 21st century version of a cult of personality: just because he's "cool" and just because he's prime meme material, doesn't mean I dislike him any less at all for what he did to Ukraine and what he's doing to Syria.

I don't know, the only thing I really dislike about him is his attitude toward homosexuality.

Sure, the things he's doing in Ukraine and Syria are dodge, but all the sides to those conflicts are incredibly dodgy.

Highly opinionated and aggressive yet well-thought out political post (pro-West, sources on request)

Putin orchistrated the Ukraine conflict. The rebels were nothing but patches of disgruntled right-wingers before the "unmarked soldiers" showed up. Thank god the rebels are slowly losing, but the devastation his actions have caused there is unbelievable.

And yes, Syria is as mixed of a bag as it gets when it comes to supporting factions, but his support of President Assad from the very beginning despite the repeated and loud war crimes is one major reason (arguably THE reason, if you ignore the small Chinese interests) why NATO couldn't help the rebels depose him. This almost directly led to the horrible situation in Syria today as well as the rise of ISIS. Now, even though it's clear that Bashar Al-Assad is virtually Satan (Assad is one of the few people on this planet that I would be comfortable personally killing), Putin is still putting 100% of his backing behind him. 
Not to mention the way he ran the Russian intervention there is disgraceful. His forces didn't even start bombing ISIS itself until fairly recently in the conflict, and when he declared "mission accomplished" and ordered his ground forces to start leaving, it wasn't because ISIS had been defeated; it was because he had fucked up the democratic/moderate non-ISIS rebels (that until then had the government on it's toes) badly enough that it is now increasingly likely Assad's forces will win the war, unless the State Department can convince the White House to begin bombing the Syrian government forces as they recommended in their open memo to the president this summer.

Not to mention what he did to Russian democracy, aside from gay rights: clamped down on freedom of speech by making it virtually illegal to protest and by arresting myriad journalists, developed a new propaganda machine that blames everything on the West and their media, received well-deserved sanctions from the international community that sent Russia's already struggling economy into a nose dive, almost certainly had the leader of the opposition killed, rigged the last election (he got 107% of the vote in an important precinct) and probably is going to rig the next election as well. He's a shiny dictator for the New Russia.

Never have a short memory when making your opinion of world leaders.
