  • Thank you for the many dispatches of yesterday! :)

I'm unsure what presence we'll make at these Allied Games, due to the short notice, but I'll confer with our ambassador to you and our Thane of Foreign Affairs to see what we can do.

  • [big][big][big]DECEMBER REGIONAL UPDATE[/big][/big][/big]

The following is a regional report compiled by the Allied States State Department.

Please visit our forums here: http://w11.zetaboards.com/Allied_Republics/index/! We love to receive Ambassadors from other regions!

    [big][big]FEDERAL UPDATES[/big][/big]
[big][big]Allied States Conducts December General Elections[/big][/big]
Written by Kastros, Allied States Secretary of State

    Chancellor Election

    CDland (RP) 23 (74.2%)
    Andune (FAP) 8 (25.8%)

    Senate Elections

    Pepe (R3C) 14 (15.6%) incumbent
    Arbor Mist (R3C) 14 (15.6%) incumbent
    Zachary (R3C) 14 (15.6%)
    Lewis and Daniel (R3C) 11 (12.2%) incumbent
    Gregory (R3C) 10 (11.1%)
    Lockland (FAP)10 (11.1%)
    Bacilli (FAP) 9 (10%)
    Britarvia (RP) 6 (6.7%)
    Nosma Washington (LRP) 2 (2.2%)
    Total Votes: 90

    Delegate Challenge Election
    TNR (FAP) 12 (54.5%) incumbent
    Obito (RP) 2 (9.1%)
    Pepe (R3C) 6 (27.3%)
    Britarvia (RP) 2 (9.1%)

Bolded candidates won their respective elections.

During the December 2016 General Election in The Allied States, we saw elections for the Chancellor, Senate, and the first Delegate election since April. The Chancellor Election saw CDland of the Republican Party take on Andune of the National Grammar Party. Both well respected members of the region fought clean and respectable campaigns. Both candidates touted their vast experience in the region, however Andune stated his main goal was to rename the region and CDland stated his main goal was to bring a new life to the regional government. CDland would go on to win in a land slide taking 74.2% of the votes with the vote tally being 23 to 8.

The Senate election saw 9 candidates contesting 4 available Senate seats. From the Libertarian Reformist Party, we saw Gregory Drakan, Pepe Drakan, Arbor Mist, Zachary Drakan, and Nosma Washington run. Bacilli and Lockland ran on behalf of the National Grammar Party. Lastly, Lewis and Daniel ran on behalf of the Otaku Party and Britarvia Drakan ran for the Republican Party. Zachary Drakan, Lewis and Daniel, Lockland, and Pepe Drakan carried the most votes during the first round of voting; however, the first vote was thrown out by the Supreme Court of The Allied States. A mistake was made in the immigration office and a newcomer was granted citizenship during the election, which is unlawful according to the regional immigration code. The newcomer voted in the election and, because the margin separating the 4th and 5th place candidates was 1 vote, it decided that the results were too close to allow for the election to stand. In the Senate Election rerun Zachary Drakan, Pepe Drakan, Arbor Mist, and Lewis and Daniel were elected to the Senate, leaving Lockland, who won a seat during the first round of voting, without a Senate seat.

Incumbent Delegate TNR Drakan was challenged to an election by a petition started by Kastros. During the registration; TNR Drakan, Kastros, Obito Drakan, Britarvia Drakan, and Pepe Drakan signed up to run for Delegate. Shortly before the election, Kastros withdrew. TNR Drkan would narrowly edge out Pepe Drakan by two votes. However, this election was also thrown out by the Supreme Court of The Allied States. For this election, the Supreme Court determined that the election rules announced did not comport with regional law. The Supreme Court felt that it was best to restart the election in order to protect the rights of voters. In the Delegate Election rerun TNR Drakan would win again, this time by a much larger margin taking 54.5% of the votes.

    [big][big]UPDATES FROM THE STATES[/big][/big]

The Allied States is comprised of three states, which each have their own subforums, draft state constitutions, and elect state governments.

    [big][big]Buxton[/big][/big]
Written by Obito Drakan, Governor of the State of Buxton

The past month in the State of Buxton has been very interesting. We have elected Obito to be the Governor of the State of Buxton once again after he returned from a short leave from the region, in which he ran uncontested and received the support of the entire state to lead it once again just as he did this past summer. Since the election, Governor Obito has been busy, successfully working out a deal with the State of the American West to annex half of its land, giving Buxton a gain of 6 additional counties: Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico and thus allowing the Great American Union to become an official state with the remainder of the land which Buxton did not annex from the American West. The State of Buxton has also begun its Presidential Parade, in which for the first time in the region's history, we discuss each of the 43 individual US Presidents, beginning with George Washington all the way to Barack Obama, with a new topic being made each day, leading up to the Inauguration Day of President-elect Donald Trump. The Presidential Parade has been a success, as citizens throughout The Allied States gather, in an unprecedented move by Governor Obito opening up the Presidential Parade to every citizen of the region, making this the first non-exclusive event that a state in The Allied States is hosting. The 2016 Buxton Awards have been announced, and five Buxton citizens will be honored for their contributions to the state: Honorary King Imperium Drakan, Governor Obito Drakan, Governor Gregory Drakan, loyal citizen since August 2015 Zachary Drakan, and loyal citizen since March 2016 JD Drakan. Yes, the State of Buxton is home to many members of The Allied States' House Drakan! In the coming weeks and months, Governor Obito has more plans for the the State of Buxton, most of which are determined by the fate of the possible Gov-Sim role play, and possible revamped States Military role play.

    [big][big]Holy Brittanian Empire[/big][/big]
Written by Kastros, Emperor of Brittania

The Allied States. The Britannian Convention was started and the future of the Empire was discussed. Materia-Collectus was narrowly re-elected as Prime Executor. The Empire saw a spike in population, doubling its active population in just a few days. The House of Commons has seen some life, the first bill in many months has been submitted and Speaker elections are under way. The Lastly, the month of December also saw the establishment of the Imperial Party and Green Party.

    [big][big]Great American Union[/big][/big]
Written by Christopher Habszollern, Patriarch of the Great American Union

GAU is the newest state in TAS, as such it offers a great opportunity for settlement, and building a culture. GAU has a new Constitution that expands the number of roles in the government. GAUs' head of state is Patriarch Christopher Habzollern. State Government is lead by Pepe Drakan as President. We would love to have you in the GAU. Let's build a state together!

    [big][big]REGIONAL PRIVATE MEDIA[/big][/big]
The Allied States hosts several private media companies, which produce radio and video shows. The following is a compilation of content created by citizens of the Allied States, accompanied by reviews written by Allied States Chief Justice JD Drakan, who also writes media reviews for his company, "Rotten Potatoes".

    [big][big]Hardball with Arbor Mist[/big][/big]

    https://www.spreaker.com/user/9469421/hardball-w-arbormist-122016

Review by JD Drakan for Rotten Potatoes:

Summary: Arbor Mist returns in his series of Hardball, opting this time for a more condensed approach and without a panel.

Analysis: Arbor returns with his show Hardball, highlighting several key issues throughout the region. He starts off the episode talking about the FREA repeal and the ensuing refunds all government entities will be receiving as a result of this bill. It's no surprise he begins his show with this headliner, as we all knew Arbor has continually been against FREA from the start. He touches on the States next, first visiting the Presidential Parade in Buxton. This is one of Governor Obito's best ideas yet, and there has been continued increasing activity as a result. Arbor notes that we are on the 20th of 45 presidents. He moves to the HBE and briefly discusses the Obama recognition act sponsored by the newly minted (no pun intended) Green Party. Finally, the GAU needs a speaker, although he won't go into much detail about his home state. The CDland Administration's first gaffe is covered, where the state media request for Buxton was accidentally sent to the GAU, much to Arbor's chagrin. He also talks about his new social issues act, which as caused quite a divide in the senate. For these to be his specific issues and this to be his show, he is pretty good at keeping his opinion out of the reporting. Other shows i've listened to are much more biased and opinionated. Arbor addresses Reg's offer to be on the Regprentice in exchange for being on Hardball, saying that Reg was more than welcome and that he'd equally like to be on the Regprentice. He also invites anyone listening who may be interested in being on the next Hardball panel to contact him. He outlines his next show, in which he says regional leaders will be talking about 2017 and the things they need to do for success.

Opinion and feedback: Arbor's latest edition of Hardball is a bite we can actually chew. He was able to reduce his show times from in excess of half an our down to less than 11 minutes. Regionia commented that this was a copying of his own format on the Regprentice, where episodes are generally less than 15 minutes. We also see elements of the Regprentice and other media broadcasts (such as Evolve's Twenty Uno broadcasts) where there is music in the beginning and end of show. I hesitate to call this copying. I think it's advisable for media companies to look at each other, see what's working, and then adapt it to their own program. The shortened episodes make it so that consumers actually are interested in listening to the shows to begin with. I can say that there have been more than several occasions when I saw a podcast or video episode come out that was over half an hour long and didnt even bother to open it. There are several things I'd recommend all media companies, podcast or video, doing in the future in order to increase consumer-ship. Number one is to make a portfolio before you begin airing. You need to know what you're talking about. Going in with no agenda or going completely off topic for extended periods of time will lengthen the time of your episodes, which in my opinion is a bad thing, as well as make people become disinterested. Remember, you're there to talk about the region for the most part. Number two is I would write this portfolio down and post it with the episode briefly outlining what is discussed, and what times in the podcast it is discussed. That way if you're for example talking about a bill that's being debated at minute 5, maybe a senator only wants to listen to that piece. Allowing them to locate the interesting parts will increase your consumer base, even if it is only a select targeting. Overall the episode was good, I expect in the future panels will force the episode to last longer, which is okay so long as everything remains on topic. Arbor maintains a composed, quirky news reporter's guise, not allowing personal biases to affect his presentation of the information, and oddly talking about himself in the third person. We'll see how long that lasts.

    [big][big]Regprentice Ep. 5[/big][/big]
    Uploaded 12/20/2016, 14:08
Produced by Regionia for the Columbia News Network

    https://www.spreaker.com/user/8127215/regprentice-ep-5

Review by JD Drakan for Rotten Potatoes:

Summary: Regionia continues his classic Donald Trump impression on the Regprentice while rolling out a new feature to the show.

Analysis: Reg begins, as always, in his spot on Donald Trump impression. One thing I like about the way he does his shows his he tells you what he's going to talk about for the whole show ahead of time. It let's me make mental notes of what I may or may not want to listen to. Reg introduces a new feature called Song of the Show, where he plays part or an entire song he is liking at the time of airing (more on this later). He also talks about the future of his show and the direction he wants it to go. On Ep. 4 of the Regprentice, he named Lewis and Daniel as Regprentice of the week. In this episode he briefly mulls over the idea of having a person of the episode vs a person of the week (hint, do person of the week). He also expresses his interest in travelling to other media shows as a guest, so long as the other media host agrees to appear on the Regprentice. I like this idea. Having coordinated inter-regional media gets different ideas talking at the same time. After this he samples his new show feature, playing a Frank Sinatra song for several minutes. (Gotta be honest here I skipped over it, not because I don't like Sinatra, but I'm listening to the Regprentice for regional news, not classic blues). When the song ends he touches base on the upcoming Christmas festival and events being planned currently by Secretary of Culture Greg. He seems to be initially reserved about it, but eventually he comes around to acknowledging the potential for activity, and offers to help Greg plan the event. One thing you've gotta give Reg credit for, he's all about activity. There's not much else to talk about as far as the region goes so he wraps the show up with a current event, particularly concerning the refugee crisis in Europe and its possible ties to the Berlin incident yesterday.

Opinion and Feedback: I've gotta say in all my time here, the Regprentice has caught fire to become one of my favorite podcasts. Regionia's Trump impression is A+, he's not usually attacking anyone, his intentions seem good, and they are consistently under that golden 15 minute benchmark. For me that's about my attention span as far as these go.You start making them 30-40 minutes and you'll find your consumer base is extremely limited. A couple of things to note. First off, I'll admit I'm not a fan of the new song feature. I don't really care about having a song in the podcast. I'm listening for Reg's perspective on the region and a damn good Trump impression, not the latest music trends. I'll skip right over it every time. It seems like filler for me. I think having the agenda at the beginning is a good step in the right direction, but I'll say what I wrote on Arbor's review: there needs to be a written portfolio attached with each episode so that consumers know what they do and don't want to listen to. Reg offers a biased approach, but he does it with the Trump persona and he does it well. Maybe it's because he's so much like Trump? I don't know for sure, but I like it nonetheless. A piece of advice for the next episode would be a more structured agenda. At the end it seemed to curtail into talking about current events because there was no more regional events to discuss. And as much as I like current events, I have actual news sources for those. Regional media should be, in my opinion, used exclusively for regional media. I think the reason why there might not have been much to talk about is because today marked the third consecutive day that a Regprentice episode was released. And as much as I love the Regprentice, I think the recent flurry of episodes may be fueled by the positive feedback the first few received. I'd suggest maybe limiting it to several times a week. Let some regional news build up for a few days, then have a good episode full of things to talk about. That way you don't need to add filler like the song feature or the current events at the end. You don't want to burn out your base. Give them something to look forward to by keeping it a bit more rare.

  • The Allied States to Host the Fifth NationStates World Fair

    TAS's NS World Fair Bid
    The Allied States

    1. Why does your region want to host the World Fair?

The Allied States is an old region (est. 2010) that’s new to NS politics, and we hope to prove how woefully inept we really are in all facets of NS. This will be our masterwork, put on for the whole world to see. We would be grateful for the opportunity to truly let you see how we prove that not only is evolution real, but that in our region it goes in reverse.

    2. What activities/ideas would you like to bring to the WF?

In addition to hosting lectures on pressing NS issues, we will host post assassin and Town of Salem games. There will also be a chess tournament, NS lectures, and a regional “literature” exchange for the nerds. TAS is a region that is 40% gay, 15% spastic, and 45% accidental, cultivating into a region with a culture all its own.

    3. What should this year’s theme for the World Fair be? How would you implement that theme?

Our theme would be Space: The Final Frontier! We think it would be a theme many people could get behind and enjoy, and our Vice Chancellor threatened to rage-quit if we didn’t decide to do this one. We hope you will enjoy our activity and RP scenario ideas:
Sci-fi television, film and literature trivia contests
Our Space Themed Wacky Wednesday, our One-Shot RP series
A space related TED-talk recommendations list and discussion thread
    Sexcapades. In Space.
    Two words: Fight Club
    A space related forum theme

    4. Any other information we should consider with respect to your region's bid?
    1. We’ve been operating an offsite forum that has had 300,000 posts made since 2012. Our forums are active daily. Check out our forums here: http://w11.zetaboards.com/Allied_Republics/index/
    2. Our strongest regional assets are our self-confidence and self-loathing.
    3. Here’s a link to our finest regional literature: http://w11.zetaboards.com/Allied_Republics/topic/11518352/12/#new
    4. Please excuse the mess when you arrive; our latest drug-fueled orgy got a little out of hand.
    5. You can ask Europeians like Josh Ravenclaw: we’re awesome.
    6. Cactus sitting is a regional pastime, and everyone should feel free to join us at some point.

The Fifth Annual NationStates World Fair is set to be hosted by The Allied States! TAS won the right to host the fair after submitting a last-minute bid cobbled together at midnight by the Cabinet and Delgate. Upon learning that the region would host the bid, TAS Bid Director John Elwin remarked that the region "looks forward to hosting this and to make it the most calamitous fair yet."

The World Fair is scheduled to kick off on January 20. The region is currently working with the NSWF Committee to design the forums for the World Fair, which should be unveiled in the upcoming days. TAS's bid specifies that the Fair will be space-themed and the region is working on the forums with that in mind.

TAS hopes to see many regions, including this one, at the NationStates World Fair! Booths at the World Fair can be reserved here: https://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=397374.

    FEBRUARY 2017 GENERAL ELECTIONS UPDATE
WRITTEN BY REGIONIA WARGRAVE, CHANCELLOR OF THE ALLIED STATES:

Hello! I am Regionia, citizen and Chancellor of the Allied States! I was assigned the fun job of writing out what happened in our February 2017 General Elections! (go democracy! especially when you win!)

There were three elections conducted this time around, our Chancellery election (which I won!), the Senate elections, and the Senate run-off between two people who tied in vote count. The latter two of these I payed practically no attent...I know alot about these elections so I'll jump into it!

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

The Chancellery Elections were fairly boring. Regionia and Brick Cash were the leading candidates who were fairly active. Nosma didn't gain any traction but did some light campaigning while Gregory Drakan failed to even post a campaign thread! (but somehow managed to get one more vote than Nosma)..Overall, Chancellery Elections were a landslide for the Regionia Campaign that stayed on message without fierce and aggressive campaigning as it did in the past. Here is a list of the campaigns and vote totals!

CHANCELLOR-VICE CHANCELLOR (PARTY AFFILIATION-STATE-CAMPAIGN NAME) VOTE COUNT (VOTE PERCENTAGE):

Regionia-Premier Vukovic (Independent - Buxton - "We The People, Restoring Our Liberty and Promise!") 18 (69.2%)

    Brick Cash-Leodore Lionheart (Independent - Buxton - "Passion. Leadership. Unity.") 5 (19.2%)

Nosma Washington (Libertarian Reformist Party - Great American Union - "The Leap Forward") 1 (3.8%)

Gregory Drakan (Libertarian Reformist Party - Buxton - No Campaign Name or N/A) 2 (7.7%)

    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

The Senate Elections were nearly automatic wins for all of the early applicants, but in the last few days of registration there was almost a doubling of candidates. This resulted in a run-off between Imperium and Leodore Lionheart. In the end, moderate campaign activity resulted in victory for CDland, Arbor Mist, Pepe Drakan, and Lewis and Daniel (run-off victory).

SENATOR (PARTY AFFILIATION-STATE) VOTE COUNT (VOTE PERCENTAGE):

CDLand (Libertarian Reformist Party - Holy Britannian Empire) 19 (20.9%)

Arbor Mist (Libertarian Reformist Party - Great American Union) 15 (16.5%)

Pepe Drakan (Libertarian Reformist Party - Great American Union) 13 (14.3%)

Lewis and Daniel (Otaku Party - Holy Britannian Empire) 12 (13.2%) ||| Lewis and Daniel (Otaku Party - Holy Britannian Empire) 13 (54.2%)

Imperium (Death to Sanity Party - Buxton) 12 (13.2%) ||| Imperium (Death to Sanity Party - Buxton) 11 (45.8%)

Christopher Habszollern (Libertarian Reformist Party - Great American Union) 11 (12.1%)

Cashew (Otaku Party - Holy Britannian Empire) 9 (9.9%)

    ALLIED UNITY WEEK UPDATE
WRITTEN BY OBITO DRAKAN, SECRETARY OF CULTURE OF THE ALLIED STATES:

Hello everyone, my name is Obito and I'm the Secretary of Culture in The Allied States.

It's my job to, uh..... Well, you see I, uh....... *pssst, hey Reg, what exactly is it that I do?* *yes, yes, mhmm, yup, okay, got it!* So it's just been confirmed! Neither the Chancellor nor myself know what it is that I'm supposed to be doing exactly! AND THAT'S JUST FINE WITH ME!

I work best while not understanding my job description! In The Allied States, it's my duty (lol he said duty) to keep people interested and entertained with the fun stuff and events going on in the region. For instance, just this past week we held Allied Unity Week, commemorating unity which we were in desperate need of, and look! It's been a massive hit! I for one loved Allied Unity Week, we all got together, talked about our history, offered love and compliments for Valentine's Day, and even attempted to throw a masquerade ball to have a party with our members dancing and drinking and doing whatever cool people do at parties. But as usual, the secretary of culture (oh hey, that's me!) got drunk, knocked over the ice sculpture which somehow a ribbon got caught to, and all the decorations came crashing down on peoples heads. And what did the culture secretary do about it? He kept drinking of course!

Unity Week kicked off with the inauguration of our newly elected Chancellor, Regionia, and we're currently still halfway through it while I'm writing this update for you, which I'm positive 95% or more of you won't even read. What? Just being honest! You think we read your updates? LOL.

    [big][big]New Chancellor[/big][/big]

People went to the voting both just before the Midterm elections to decide if they approved or disapproved of Chancellor Regionia. The vote came out to be Yes 11 (45.8%), No 13 (54.2%). Since No won, for the first time in the region's history, it was seen that the Chancellor couldn't continue on for the rest of the term and that new chancellor elections must be held. Chancellor Regionia likely lost because of a number of scandals that went around about his office from babygate [Chancellor accused of having a child out of wedlock], shufflegate [in the end around 13 cabinet secretaries resigned], surveygate [Chancellor's girlfriend who is not a member of the forums voted], and more. Articles of impeachment were drafted and later dropped after the Chancellor both failed the Midterm approval poll and dropped out of running for Chancellor. They were dropped in favor of a censure.

With elections for Chancellor now upon us, Regionia decided to run, as did Brick Drakan, and Pepe Drakan. However early into the campaign Brick dropped out of the election, and then a bit later Regionia dropped out. In their stead Lewis and Daniel aka Leodore Lionheart decided to run, he was originally rumored to have run before campaigning started but "Dropped out" before it officially did. Pepe had CD has his running mate, and Lewis and Daniel Kastros. Both CD and Kastros are former Chancellors of the highest degree.

The Election was tight and huge. The region hasn't seen such an election in perhaps years. In the end the vote stood Lewis and Daniel (OP-HBE) 16 (44.4%), Pepe Drakan (LRP-GAU) 20 (55.6%). It was a close election that was neck and neck for most of it. However in the end Pepe returned to the high office for the third time.

    [big]Senate Elections[/big]

There were three seats up for the senate in these midterm elections. The race was very competitive and interesting, going back and forth several times. However here are the results

    Steven G. Eastridge 16 (21.9%)
    Regionia Wargrave 11 (15.1%)
    Obito Drakan 14 (19.2%)
    Hunteiria 7 (9.6%)
    Kastros 15 (20.5%)
    Premier Vukovic 10 (13.7%)

Steven G. Estridge, Obito Drakan, and Kastros all won seats in the senate. Kastros was later elected as Speaker of the Senate.

As Pepe was a senator it was thought that he would be picking his own replacement, however due to a clerical error he was unable to and instead a special senate election was called to fill the vacancy. Here are the results as of this issue.

    Premier Vukovic 15 (78.9%)
    Regionia Wargrave 4 (21.1%)

Premier Vukovic will win the special election. She originally was running for re-election in the midterm senate election, but lost out slightly. However she has gained re-entry into the senate beating former Chancellor Regionia in a big unlikely event.

    [big]State Reports[/big]

    Holy Britannian Empire
A new emperor has been chosen, Mytzonia Drakan has taken power with a promise to Make the Empire Great Again! #MEGA, an updated constitution is already being drafted with the Monarch gaining new powers and overall simplification of government. At same time, the political scene also seems to be promising with a looming dispute for power between the right-wing Imperial Party and the new left-wing party, the United Left.

Overall, the future looks bright for the Empire with renewed leadership and a competitive political structure. Ultimately a great deal will be determined by whether the right or left will triumph and what they will do with the authority given to them.

    Great American Union
GAU has elected a new President in Arbor G. Mists and already activity seems to be flood back into the state. He lifted the state of emergency, proposed dual citizenship, and has gotten the state active and moving again after months of sluggish activity. Things are looking up for the state and activity is on a rise.

    Buxton
A New Governor is in town, and his name is Brick Cash and he's looking to improve the state. The State voted to repeal all of it's passed legislation and start over from scratch. After that a new constitution was voted into place and things have been moving again. With this fresh start that will hopefully work out for the state. However things are up and active.

    Overall
Overall state activity is up and the states are working pretty well. They're returning to life and will hopefully keep on doing it!

  • Regional Podcast - General News

J.D. Classified, with your host, J.D. Drakan gives our embassies a general news update on what is happening in The Allied States.

    Episode 18: https://www.spreaker.com/user/j.d.drakan/j-d-classified-episode-18

THE ALLIED STATES SCRAPES ITS ENTIRE FORUM, SAVING SEVEN YEARS OF HISTORY

The Allied States (TAS) has used the Zetaboards free forum hosting service since its inception in early 2012. However, when Zetaboards owner Brandon Kopetzy announced that all forums under the Zetaboards service would be phased out and replaced with the Tapatalk service, the Allied States largely met the news with apathy. After all, a sizable portion of the regional activity has moved to the Discord servers. As the timeline for the conversion began to loom closer, however, the region realized that the changeover would be downgrade rather than an upgrade, with many features that the forum depends on, such as CSS and Javascript customizability, being made premium features. The Tapatalk conversion has been widely panned by Zetaboards communities, with many forum administrators now seeking alternatives to Zetaboards.

With rumors floating around that the conversion of boards could occur imminently, by the end of July, the forum administrators of TAS decided that the first priority should be to preserve the data on the Allied States forum. With the database safely downloaded, TAS would have the flexibility to find a new hosting service or to self-host a new forum. Unfortunately, the Zetaboards service does not allow admins to download a backup database of their forums.

“We were very concerned that after the transition, the TAS community would be left in an untenable position with no good options,” says CDland, a forum admin. “We would have been forced to either stay on the limited Tapatalk platform, or to restart on a new service from scratch, losing the 350,000 posts accrued over seven years of regional history. A region can be defined as the sum of its members and its history, and we would have lost access to our history had we not been able to download the forums. TAS would have lost a fundamental aspect of its identity. We as a region shared many good and a few bad memories together on our forums. It wouldn’t have felt like TAS without our posting history”.

With possibly only weeks or days to save the forums, the admins were able to utilize a scraper to download all of the posts, topics, and user profiles present on the forums. The scraper was a script designed to crawl through all of the posts on the sprawling TAS forums and save them.“It was a lengthy process,” explains J.D. Drakan. “We had two admins running the scraper in parallel to provide redundancy. Even then, the scraper occasionally errored-out mid-download. Fortunately, we had the requisite technical expertise in our region to develop patches to our scraper to allow it to complete the download successfully. Every second was precious, because scraping will not be possible any longer after the conversion. If we had been delayed, we might not have been able to download the forums.”

The admins have already demonstrated that they are able to re-upload the downloaded database to a phpBB test forum. Now, TAS will have the flexibility to preserve its history and identity while transitioning to a new forum service. Options being discussed in the region include self-hosting a phpBB server and uploading the server to Jcink, a free hosting service that allows users to download the server database for free. We wish our fellow NationStates regions success in preserving their history and look forward to a bright post-Zetaboards future.

    Chancellor’s Corner

Hey there! If you’re reading this then, well, congratulations, you made it this far through our update. That’s saying something, cause even I didn’t get that far. Anyways, I’d like to formally extend an invitation to you from The Allied States to come see our region. If you’ve heard of us then our reputation proceeds us, and that reminds me I need to fire my PR team. But if you haven’t had the misf- I mean pleasure of hearing of us, I encourage you to stop by our forums or discord and check us out. I am in the process of organizing our diplomatic corps in conjunction with our Secretary of Foreign Affairs to begin sending ambassadors to discords around Nation States, so feel free to do the same with us! We are a highly active region on discord and will begin to pick back activity up once we finish our forum conversion. I’d love to talk to any interested regions concerning state visits, military ops, or N-Day coordination (our region came in 7th place last time with far fewer nations than most in the top 10). Thank you for reading, and I hope to talk with you soon.
-J.D. Drakan, 23rd Chancellor of The Allied States

  • Thanks for the update! Scraping the forums and getting all your posts is quite an accomplishment...as far as I know, you're the only region to do so. Sorry that you're having to go through that Tapatalk shit though, it seems that most regions put their faith in Zetaboards, only to see that faith scorned.

I remember when it first started as InvisionFree back in 2003/2004, and everyone thought it was amazing because it was a free forum host that was miles beyond what other hosts like Proboards were at the time. Then when IPS changed their licence and made Invision Power Board a paid product, Brandon created Zetaboards. It kinda sucks seeing how things have changed...back then he was always doing things to make IF/ZB better, and it was obvious he really loved what he was doing. Now he can't really even be bothered to interact with or care about the community he spent over a decade growing. I can't help but wonder what happened to him to make him so apathetic...

J.D. Classified, with your host, J.D. Drakan gives our embassies a general news update on what is happening in The Allied States.

THE ALLIED STATES RECONSTITUTES ITS FORUMS

Greetings to all Ambassadors in other NationStates regions! As many in NationStates know, the Zetaboards forum hosting service has merged with Tapatalk, forcing every board on the service to convert to a Tapatalk board. In a previous update, we mentioned that the region was scraping its forums and would be uploading the scraped database to a new forum host.

We are pleased to announce that we have completed the migration process to the free host Jcink, recovering all of our posts up to mid-July 2018. Our new forum address is at http://alliedstates.jcink.net/. Ambassadors in other regions, as well as anyone who has ever created an account on our old regional forums, please recover your account on our new forums (or create a new one). The instructions for doing so are here, and involve using the password recovery service or sending a telegram/direct message to one of our board admins: CDland (Discord: CDland#9671), Free States of America, (Discord: Free States#4853), The Northern United American Republic (Discord: Catcher in the Ryan#8125), or Jack Dredd (Discord: J.D. Drakan#4743).

We hope to see you on our new forums!

    Chancellor's Corner
Hello again! Yes, these idiots gave me another term, which basically makes me dictator. My pronouns are Dear and Leader. Anyways, we finally converted our forums from that dumpster fire of Tapatalk to the much more A E S T H E T I C jcink. I hope you’re able to come by and check it out! We’ve also just kicked off our famous “government simulation” roleplay, where you control groups of representatives in charge of deciding important policies such as abortion, gun rights, or whether or not Astrology should be banned. And if none of that piques your interest, we have a discord that acts like an ADHD 15 year old who just shotgunned two red bulls and a liter of mountain dew. Trust me, it’s a good time. As long as you have a therapist on retainer.
With all that being said, I hope you’ll swing by to check us out! None of us bite too hard (although  I’d still make sure your tetanus shots are up to date). And of course, anyone interested in organizing festivals, state visits, or military operations can always contact myself or my cabinet. Thank you for reading and I hope to see you soon!
