So I was getting real excited last night because I was talking to a couple of friends from BC and I was looking into UVIC and saw it was super cheap. I could go there instead of community college where I live in, get a somewhat decent job and roommate with one of my friends and I'd finally be able to escape my abusive situation.

Today I found out UVIC inflates prices for intenrational students from ~$8,000 to ~18,000, which eventually climbs to $25,000 over the years.

I want to fucking off myself. At the bare fucking minimum, if I stay here, I'll have to wait another two fucking years to get out of this soul crushing abusive household. BC was the only place where I could do this, and this is probably the norm there. I cna't fucking do this.

I'm sure it seems like a shameful thing to do to outsiders, but our universities have been doing the same thing, because if they don't, our weak currency would lead to our universities being filled with international students who would use the knowledge and skills they learn here just to enrich themselves overseas, and the local students' prospects would become even worse than they already are.

Our government is considering making all graduates do two years of community service before they can start earning proper money with their jobs, and this is actually something I can fall behind. Seems fair if we want state-funded higher education. Rare is the day that I agree with the ANC about anything.

So Christopher Tolkien retired as head of the Tolkien Estate, and with this knowledge in mind, Amazon's LOTR TV series suddenly makes a lot more sense.
Especially the part where they seem to want to do a prequel? Which is a bit dumb, in my opinion. I mean, sure, you can focus it on young Aragorn doing his Awesome Mccoolguy shit, like walking through Moria, going to Harad, being Thorongil for like 20 years, all that shit, but it seems like that's sort of...completely not the point of LOTR. Like, shit, one of the great things about it is that while Aragorn's the guy who would ordinarily be the hero of the plot, here he's a supporting character, and we just gloss over a lot of the cool guy shit he does because that's not really important, like, say, all the action movie hero shit between 'having a chat with dead guys' and 'sailing a captured and repurposed pirate fleet to the Pelennor Fields'.
So, sure, baller dude, but it seems like it'll probably be missing the point.
Which, now that I think of it, is exactly what the last couple seasons of Game of Thrones have been doing, so, sure, fuck it, why not.

I'd be fine with any of those sideplots being explored in a show, as long as it were done properly. With the Tolkien Estate at the helm, I was hoping that Christopher Tolkien would be a moderating force who would help ensure faithfulness to his father's work. Now, it's clear that that's not the case: he resigned back in August, and probably had no say in this decision.

We're probably going to start seeing more and more LOTR media come out, now that Christopher Tolkien's retired. Adaptions of tales in the Silmarillion and such (though I suppose it's possible that, as coauthor, Christopher Tolkien may be able to block such things from happening). Most will probably suck, some might be amazing, we'll see.

Apparently I'm doing day shift training tomorrow, so for the next three days, I am not going to be online at the same time as the rest of you. I will be a normal South African again.

I can't wait until Black Friday passes...all this preparation and pre-event business just gets to be too much sometimes.

I just noticed that the FCC is voting on rolling back Net Neutrality next month and it pisses me off. Especially since the rollback is expected to pass.

I mean, it's hardly surprising...I guess that's what politics are going to be like for awhile now. Republicans are going to try to undo everything Democrats did, then Democrats will come to power and redo everything, then the  Republicans will come to power and cycle will repeat!

I know I'm sounding like That Guy, but this all doesn't have to do with politics. It has to do with business. The corporations have been pushing this since I was 12. This is just the end result of a society where the hoarding of resources and the maximization of profits is normal and acceptable. Net neutrality constantly being on its death bed is a symptom, not a disease.

A friend of mine is sending me women's clothes in the coming weeks. I already have a style figured out for the first time they arrive.

I'm so excited. I really need this, I really need to feel feminine, to feel some sense of physical connection to my gender identity.

I might even post pics on here, so if I do, you'll see what I look like for the first time. Well, probably only the bottom half of my face and below, I don't think I'm confident with showing my entire face. But it's a step to becoming who i really am, and I can't wait.
