  • I can't with good conscience recommend A Song of Ice and Fire because of books 4 and 5. Sample chapters from book 6 look promising, however.

EDIT: And yes, Seroim, I know The Da Vinci Code is filth. It just happens to be very entertaining filth.

EDIT 2: Another book I consider a must-read is Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder. We actually had it as a textbook for Philosophy in my first year.

  • I'll have to agree with Laurentus, Sophie's World is a really good read. We used it as a textbook as well.

If you're a fan of science fiction, I'd recommend The Forever Watch by David Ramirez as well. I just finished it and I love it.

I had quite a difficult time getting through both Angels and Demons and the Da Vinci Code, I think I was about halfway through the latter before shouting "Is this book ever going to go anywhere?!" and closing it.

I did enjoy the movies a bit though, particularly Angels and Demons. I think it was one of the first (and possibly only instance I can think of right off the bat) that I enjoyed the movies more than the books.  :))

  • The Da Vinci Code starts off with a bang, and by the middle absolutely nothing happens. Perhaps the difference is that I was like 15 when I read both Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code, so the occasional riddle and word game was enough to get me through it.

I was around the same age, since I tried reading it in high school.  I guess just different strokes for different folks, since I didn't think Da Vinci Code started off with a bang myself.  :P  But one book won't interest every single person, that's why there's millions out there.  :)

Seroim doesn't fuck around on book recommendations...

Seroim loves reading but has pretty narrow interests (should be obvious with the number of legal philosophy books on the list).

So, in other words, you are into scheiße.

That's okay. Renowned shitposter Seroim will help you stagger through this paraphilia and lunge for the better things in life.

I actually read every Dan Brown novel. My favourite by far was Digital Fortress, what with the endgame enigma that a high schooler could solve while a team of highly educated people with IQs in the 170s barely manage to do so. I was screaming at the book near the end >_>

That's how I feel about some of the games I play sometimes.   The game tries to make you think "OMG THESE PUZZLES ARE SO DIFFICULT!" and I'm playing through them like "I could have solved this blindfolded and asleep..."

  • Dan Brown is my only guilty pleasure. Usually I prefer modern classics like The White Tiger, Life of Pi, The Alchemist and so forth.

I love books of philosophy, but only when I'm in the mood for it.

The best way to read a Dan Brown novel is with half your brain asleep and quite a few beers. But then again, just about anything is better at that stage. :P

That said, I absolutely hated Digital Fortress. It was all the filth without any of the crazy conspiracies.

  • Just gonna pop in here again, but the book that Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett did together was Good Omens, an absolutely wonderful book that I love and recommended you all read.

I need to write all these books down, and look them up. I'm glad people are doing this!  :D

  • I second the Phillip K Dick (also check out Man in the High Castle) and Looking Glass Wars. I'm very surprised nobody has mentioned A Song of Ice and Fire yet. Excellent series, if you have the time. Here's my list:

    Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell
    Another Country by James Baldwin
Go Tell It on the Mountain, also by Baldwin
Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
    Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison(?)

I always forget about A Song of Ice and Fire, because I assume everyone has heard of it from the TV show :) I realise that probably isn't true though.

And I can't believe I forgot about Ken Follett!!  :o His "A world Without End" (the sequel to Pillers of the Earth) is also very good :) even if it does have a few annoying characters :s

People who say "OMG I LURVE GAME OF THRONES <3 <3" but then you find out they never read the books are the most annoying people ever.

Also, to go back on Dan Brown, I thought Deception Point had a great premise, but Brown is just too terrible a writer to flesh it out correctly.

I don't like any of the Langdon books. They are as formulaic as Tom Clancy novels.

The Lost Symbol is absolutely the worst thing in existence.

But I must say I always found Game of Thrones better than A Song of Ice and Fire until season 4 started. For all the excellent back-story, characters and history to A Song of Ice and Fire, along with the mythology, there's just too much descriptions of food and purple prose to ever make me love it. GRRM should probably just have gotten another writer to transform his excellent ideas into novels.
