  • I wanted to know what books you guys recommended for everybody to read  :D

I, personally, recommend House of Leaves, by Mark Danielewski. It is amazing, though I was terrified of dark hallways for a while *coughIstillamcough*. Any recs you guys have?

  • What genres do you like? Until I have an idea of what you like, I can't really recommend anything.

I would however recommend The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga and We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver. Both can be hard to stomach, especially We Need to Talk About Kevin, but they're completely worth it.

  • House of Leaves is an excellent book! A real treasure!

I doubly recommend Valis by Phillip K. Dick and Soledad Brother by George Jackson...

  • I read a lot of Sci-Fi and Historical Fiction. :)

I love pretty much all of Robert Harris' books, but mainly "Pompeii" and the Cicero Series.

I also really like Terry Pratchett, although I am not sure what genre you would put his books in, but they are pretty fun and funny :)

Recently I have read a lot of Peter F. Hamilton and Iain M. Banks, but they can be pretty deep Sci-Fi :)

And even more recently I have read the "Rivers of London" books by Ben Aaronovitch, but they might be too British for some :s

Also Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series but I haven't finished that :P

That's just what I have been reading recently though :D

Sorry for not including specific books by the way :s but it's hard to decide. :s

I second the Terry Pratchett recommendation.  He's an interesting author for sure, but he's got some fascinating material.

On the note of strange authors, I'd also recommend Neil Gaiman, as he's another good but strange one (and he and Terry Pratchett have even done a book together).  You might know some of Gaiman's books that were adapted into movies, such as Stardust Mirrormask, and Coraline.

    3) The Da Vinci Code

    barf

    1. "Les Rois Maudits" series - Maurice Druon
    2. "Wallander" series - Henning Mankell
    3. On The Road - Jack Kerouac
    4. L'écume des jours - Boris Vian
    5. Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov
    6. Candide, ou l'optimisme - Voltaire
    7. Les fleurs du mal - Charles Baudelaire (poetry)
    8. For Want of a Nail - Robert Sobel (person who likes historical fiction - you'll love this one)
    9. Republic - Plato
    10. De rerum natura - Lucretius (fascinating...and so forward-thinking too)
    11. Meditations - Marcus Aurelius
    12. Leviathan - Thomas Hobbes
    13. On Crimes and Punishment - Cesare Beccaria
    14. De l'esprit des lois - Montesquieu
    15. Hyperion Cantos - Dan Simmons
    16. Forever War - Joe Haldemann
    17. De bello gallico - Julius Caesar (love the dry style and the anthropological information on the tribes, lol)
    18. De la démocratie en Amérique - Alexis de Tocqueville (every American should read this and weep for what they lost)
    19. Surveiller et punir : naissance de la prison - Michel Foucault (L'archéologie du savoir is also good, but maybe a bit too heavy for this list)
    20. Le malade imaginaire - Molière (play)

Honorable mention : De Oratore - Cicero (much better than Aristotle's Rhetoric imo)

  • Seroim doesn't fuck around on book recommendations...
I'm gonna also recommend the Eternal Golden Braid.
I'm afraid I don't remember who it's by at the moment but it is exceptional...

  • I second the Phillip K Dick (also check out Man in the High Castle) and Looking Glass Wars. I'm very surprised nobody has mentioned A Song of Ice and Fire yet. Excellent series, if you have the time. Here's my list:

    Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell
    Another Country by James Baldwin
Go Tell It on the Mountain, also by Baldwin
Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
    Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison(?)

I always forget about A Song of Ice and Fire, because I assume everyone has heard of it from the TV show :) I realise that probably isn't true though.

And I can't believe I forgot about Ken Follett!!  :o His "A world Without End" (the sequel to Pillers of the Earth) is also very good :) even if it does have a few annoying characters :s

  • I'm about halfway through my second read of Pillars right now. My library doesn't have World Without End so I'll have to find it somewhere. Did you know it was made into a miniseries?

Yeah, I watched both the Pillars series and World Without End,  :-\ but they really weren't as good as the books :s they cut a lot of the minute details out and a lot of the architectural exposition, and it really cut into the feel of the show compared to the book.   :P

  • That's true. The architechtual details are a huge part of Pillars. And a lot of the plotting and emotional content would be difficult to transition to a show, too.
