It was interesting to watch the clip about There Came an Echo, because I still remember when I was a kid and we were being told that voice recognition was the next big thing in computer technology and yet 20 years later that hasn't really happened. You can even look up old Apple advertisements from the 80s on Youtube and see where they included voice recognition...so it isn't something that's caught on. Can it in gaming? I don't know, but looking at it from a gameplayer's perspective, I'm not sure. It took 15-20 seconds for the guy to issue voice commands at the beginning of the clip, and I think someone with a mouse could do the same thing faster. Then he issued a command for one of the characters to switch weapons, which means he had to know and memorize that this character had that weapon in their inventory. Going to an inventory screen and looking it up would defeat the purpose of doing voice commands.

My sense is that it can work, but the game is going to have to be designed around it...they're not going to be able to attach this to a game just like any other and have it be an enjoyable experience.

There were a few articles I could have written about too, but this is the one I picked. :P

Having backed this project on Kickstarter and managed to play a few of the missions (it doesn't work too well on my Mac's VM, but that's no fault of the game), I have to say that it does work. When you say "the game is going to have to be designed around it", There Came an Echo is designed around it. The entire game works around that central concept, that you voice command your troops.

You do have a tactical HUD, so you can see what your troops health levels are and what weapons you are carrying. The only thing is to learn what all the voice commands the game expects are (the one to "zoom to [name]" is useful to move the camera to that particular troop).

It works 99% of the time, and when it does work you really feel like you are part of the action, that they are relying on you to voice those commands. It really becomes frustrating when you can't think fast enough to voice the commands before the situation changes; it's an entirely different situation from mouse clicking that takes it into an entirely new way of gameplay.

If you are at all interested about the possibility of commanding troops using voice commands, you should get this game. As a game it's fairly OK, but it really is a lot of fun when you take the voice command into account. :)

  • I'm still a bit skeptical, but I suppose I'll just have to wait and see for me at least. Since you've had experience with the game, is there still a mode where you can use a keyboard and mouse?

  • You can use a keyboard/mouse, but that completely reduces the impact of the game. As I said, the game revolves around you using voice commands to direct your troops, and the fun comes from doing so. Using the keyboard/mouse removes that novelty and the game isn't half as good as a result.

  • Indeed! My girlfriend and I went to our local board game cafe shop (it's a cafe with tea and cake, and they sell board games too, win win win! :D )

There, we played just short of 11 hours of board games, including Sheriff of Nottingham, Boss Monster, Sushi Go, and a 4 hour game of Firefly where we really didn't get any close to finishing but still had a lot of fun!

  • A "board game cafe shop"? I don't think we have anything like that around here. I'm imagining an internet cafe but with board games instead of computers and wi-fi. :P

That's pretty spot on, although there is wifi too!

It's a pretty unique place to be fair, I know of no other places like it. But it has fast become one of my favourite places I frequent.

  • It may just be a British thing...or even an urban thing. I think I remember Daylen Phoenix telling me he volunteers at a place similar to that, or did volunteer before he started working again...

So can you play computer games too since there's wifi? :P
