Title: The Wintrean Games: Soccer (IC)
Post by: Arenado on August 08, 2017, 05:18:57 AM
Welcome to the Wintrean Games for Soccer! Why we must call it soccer and not Football, you can thank the Americans for that! I mean, its an Egg you hold in your hand! Its Handegg, not football!

Uhh.... anyway! The teams are up, and with the help of a Random Number Generator (https://www.random.org), we have the teams and their strengths! I made it so that the number would always be between 30 and 70 so that all teams would have a fighting chance and we would not end up with a 0.02 strength team.

Hinton Hounds(Pogglind): 0.55
Imperial Eagles(United Acarian Empires): 0.44
Intelligeneria Intellectuals(Intelligeneria): 0.60
Luskan Lunatics(Aethelia): 0.55
Mathian Destroyers(Mathyland): 0.46
Most Holy Soccer Team(Crushita): 0.35
New Konstantinopolis Komodos(Escanthea): 0.67
Penguinia Patriots(Penguin Dictators): 0.50
North Gralend Gold Hawks(North Gralend): 0.49
Skyhelm Mountaineers(Geramundo): 0.52
Snow Turnips(Idantir): 0.58
Southern Imperial Majestics(Southern Gralend): 0.38

With 12 teams, we will be splitting up into 4 separate divisions of 3 each. All teams in a division will play each other once and points will be awarded (Win:3, Draw: 2, Lose: 1) based on performance. If there is no point difference, Goal Difference will decide the winner. If there is no Goal Difference, a Winner take all match will be played between the 2 teams. If all teams in a division have the same Goal Difference and points, then a team will be randomly chosen by virtue of chance to be eliminated and the other 2 teams shall play to determine who shall progress.

The 4 winners of each Division shall then enter the Semi-Finals, where the 4 teams shall split into 2 matches. The winner of each match shall progress to the finals while the losers shall progress to the 3rd Place deciding match. Who ever wins the Finals shall be the Champion.

The Divisions shall look like this by virtue of random chance.

Division 1, Round 1

Mathian Destroyers VS Southern Imperial Majestics

The Match
Welcome here to Inaba Stadium in the wonderful city of Shujin! I'm your commentator for today, Akira Kurusu! On the left side of the pitch today we have the Mathematical Monsters, the Numbers Guys, the Mathian Destroyers! And on the other side, the Original Imperials, the Aggressive Expanders, the Southern Imperial Majestics! And now with the starting 11 coming out, lets talk about some stats.....

...Ohhh, Goal! Goal, a stunning early goal for the Imperials by Forward Striker Michael Van Alden! Southern fans are uproariously cheering, you can hear them for miles! The Mathyland team doesn't look to worried though, as they line up for the counter-attack....

....And we have the Equalizer! Goal for the Mathylandians! The Numbers Nerds have leveled the playing field! Their fans are certainly happy, they just gave the Southerners a run for their money cheer wise! And with just a minute to spare before half time to, and there goes the whistle! Lets see some replays on the performance so far....

....And he shoots! Ohh, disappointment as Southern second striker Walton De Royce hits the crossbar again! So far, the shots on goal are heavily favoring the Mathians, with 6-4 being the current tally on shots and the score even at 1-1! With half an hour left, can either team pull out a victory? Lets see as the Mathy goalkeeper takes a goal kick....

....and the forward midfielder passes to the striker, he makes a run for it, where is the defense? It looks like they were sleeping! It looks like they may pay dearly for their in attentiveness as he shoots.... HE SCORES! IT WENT PAST THE GOALKEEPERS OUTSTRETCHED HANDS FOR A GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL! The crowd here is ecstatic as the Mathians have just scored their 2nd goal, putting them ahead of the Southerners! With less then 10 minutes, it looks to be all over, the disappointed look on Southern fans faces telling! But here they come for another counter-attack....

...and the whistle blows! That's all she wrote, and with the final score being 2-1 for the Mathians they couldn't be happier! And now for some replays.....

Mathian Destroyers:2 Southern Imperial Majestics:1

Division 2, Round 1

North Gralend Gold Hawks VS Most Holy Soccer Team

The Match
And that brings us here to Antietam Stadium in the lovely town of Gettysburg, I'm your host Lee McClellan! Today we have the Terror from the North, the Northern Gold Hawks facing off against the Geriatric Grandpas, the Pious Passers, the Most Holy Soccer Team from Crushita! Here comes the starting 11, and....wait....ummm, it looks like one of the MHST players just pulled a back muscle! This...oh lord, this ought to be good.

And the referee has asked me again not to call it Soccer but to call it holy spudball, so....ya. Anyway, here come the socce....uhh...spudball with the....ceremonial spud painted on it. The MHST have stopped to call a prayer circle....now theres chanting.....now singing....

...and after the ritual sacrifice the game begins! I'm still surprised that the Wintrean Games Committee allowed the MHST to play in cassocks but hey, I'm all for religious freedom! And...wait, they scored already? And the North have scored a goal! The attacking midfielder was attempting to pass to the striker but overshot and the Holy goalkeeper was still saying a rosary when he scored! So congratulations to Gold Hawk midfielder Tom O'Malley! And here comes the Holy counter-attack...

...and that's half-time! With 0 shots on goal by the Holy Team the score remains 4-0! The Northern players seem to have adopted a very defensive playstyle, not much attacking going on anymore. And let me just recount the current injuries, Father Ted Montgomery (Holy Team) has suffered a pulled back and Monsignor Francis Innocent (Holy Team) has suffered a sprained ankle! And I'm told an extension for half-time has been allowed for a bit of prayer, we will be back with.....

.....And that's the game! With the Final whistle blown, the score is 4-0for the North Gralend Gold Hawks!
Thanks to all that tuned in today, see you next time!

North Gralend Gold Hawks:4 Most Holy Soccer Team:0

Tune if tomorrow for Division 3 and Division 4, Round 1!

Division 3, Round 1

Hinton Hounds VS Imperial Eagles

The Match
Welcome to what we hope will be a smashing game of Football here at Tropico Stadium in the lovely town of Tropico! I'm your commentator for today, Antonio Lopez! Today we have the Canine Companions, the Pooch Pals, the Hinton Hounds! I understand that they have their mascot in the stadium, a dog named Bucks! They will be facing off against the Imperial Eagles from the Acarian Empire! Here they come now, with double eagle logo resplendent! They've shook hands and are ready for a good match, each side putting on their best show! And now, a word from our sponsor.....

....And it is half time! Crikey, what a game so far! Neither side has scored but the effort and spirit are clearly on display! With the current shot on goal ratio at 4-7 in favor of the Hounds this could be anyone's game! We had a yellow card issued for a risky tackle by the Acarians but no injuries so far, lets hope this keeps up! And here comes the players for the second half....

.....Oh, this looks dangerous here, the Acarians are moving up aggressively, my, what a move, the striker just made a feint and is shooting past the defenders! Its just him and the goalkeeper! He shoots......and SCORES! GOAL FOR THE IMPERIAL EAGLES! THE DEADLOCK IS BROKEN AND WITH LESS THAN 15 MINUTES LEFT IT LOOKS TO BE ALL OVER! The Hounds are not giving up yet, though, with a look of steely determination they launch the counter-attack!...

....and the final whistle blows with the score still at 1-0 for the Imperial Eagles, no one can say that neither side did not give it their all, it was a close match and both sides should keep their heads up with pride at such a wonderful display!

Hinton Hounds:0 Imperial Eagles:1

Division 4, Round 1

Snow Turnips VS Penguinia Patriots

The Match
This is it, the last game of Round 1! It's been a long time coming with fans of both sides here in the absolutely packed Ferguson Stadium in the town of Malchester, I'm your commentator for today, Bill Le Petomane. We have quite the match for you today, on the home side the Idantir team have spent a fortune, literally, a fortune trying to get the best of the best in their team! Has it worked? Only one way to find out for the Snow Turnips! On the away side today we have quite the diverse team, many nations went into this team, I dont now if they represent the Penguin Dictators or the UN! Hahaha, its the Penguinia Patriots!

Both sides are shaking hands for what should turn out to be an exciting game! And the ref blows the whistle.... and they're off!

.... Look at that move there, all the money Idantir put into this team was well spent! Excellent football and now he's in with a chance...the Snow Forward Striker gets into the box...and he scores! The crowd goes wild, what an amazing goal, beautiful maneuvering! But the Patriots look more determined than ever as they come on the attack!

....And GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALGOALGOALGOALGOAL! What an amazing goal from a free kick! The Snow Turnips lead by 2 now! It looks like they may have this in the bag now, what an amazing turn of events so far! And with that the ref blows the whistle, signalling half time, can the Patriots turn it around?...

....and here comes another attack from the Patriots, he swerves around the defender and makes a shot at range! I dont believe it, he scored! The crowd is hysterical now, cheers filling the stadium all around, even the Snow Turnips are impressed by that goal, what an amazing play!....

.....The Snow Turnips have substituted 2 Defenders into play, evidently adopting a more cautious, defensive approach, but the Patriots are still advancing down the pitch, slowly but surely! It's been a gut wrenching game and with 5 minutes left anything can happen, can the Patriots equalize? Wait, there's a break....the star Patriot striker has broken through and is advancing down the middle! Just hem and the goalkeeper! He shoots!
OH MY GOD HE SCORES! THIS IS AMAZING! WITH LESS THAN 5 MINUTES THE PATRIOTS HAVE EQUALIZED!
WHAT A FANTASTIC GOAL! They never gave up and that determination has paid off now!

...And the game ends with 2-2 all and an absolutely amazing game having been played!

Uncertain if the mention means that action is expected or required? I will be paying attention to this topic, I saw the match results before the first post was even updated to include the 3rd and 4th games.

I guess I could comment though since you mentioned me: Whatever program you found is kinda weird, something I expected from when you first said that you found a single program that does multiple sports. Looks like that explains the text output and the fact that only one input is used for team skill. I would guess that the only difference between the sports you can select would be how the NPC announcer describes how the points are scored and how many points are scored. There isn't even a mention of passing, or penalties, or a kick-off. Just goal attempts. Just look at game 3: "And now, a word from our sponsor..... ....And it is half time!". With no goals randomly generated in the first half of the game, it didn't come up with anything in between. It's like lazy programming to make it completely interchangeable with American Football, just change the goals to touchdowns and field goals, and make the points go up by 3 and 7 instead of by 1, and it's all the same. Or even simpler, do it for Hockey and the scoring works the same but nobody is ridiculously shouting "GOAL". Don't even have the change the mechanics because team skill is as simple as possible; it's not divided into individual player skill, and doesn't allow teams to be better at offense or defense than the other. I would guess that whoever made this program is more interested in being a sports announcer than in the actual sports, the primary focus seems to be in the writing, not the programming.
Maybe later you could say what program you're using exactly, I'd like to analyze it. Maybe even find flaws. Back in the Hogwarts region, I found a flaw in a Quidditch program we used since I thought the results were strange, so obvious that I didn't even need to look at the code, so I'm tempted to try to reverse engineer how this program works too.

Edit: ".... and their off!". "...payed off" Okay, maybe they weren't entirely focused on the writing...

It was just a 'hey, heads up, this is going on".

I use this: http://www.thirdgeek.com/ns/xkoranate/

All the writing and flavor text, that all me. This is what a 'match' on the program looks like.

Test Match 1
Test Team 1 0–1 Test Team 2

But since just copy pasting the results on the program would be about as exciting as watching paint dry, I write some stories so that the match feels more interesting. I went with a 'sports caster commentating on match' because that's what I relate to when I watch football. Am I the best writer in the world? Good god, no, I'm a hack and I realize this but I am doing the best I can.

And while I would love to include all the less exciting parts of football, passing, injuries, free kicks, goal kicks, corner kicks and all that writing an entire essay for a full 90 minute match for what will be a minimum of 18 games is wayyyyy to much for me to handle.

Was I going for a totally realistic, analytical and tactical RP? No, this was always supposed to be a more causal, laid back experience for everyone, a passive experience.

Ah, didn't realize that. I thought you were taking that as output directly from the program you were using.
...That program output is really boring looking. The necessity of adding the flavor text is very obvious now. Also the lack of anything other than shooting, that's a lot more effort than I knew you needed to put into this if you're doing all of that manually rather than just putting team names and two numbers into a program, I would only expect more text if it were being auto-generated, I don't expect and don't intend to request that you describe it all in that detail for every game by hand.
Thank you for the explanation, I hadn't thought of the alternative that the program was mostly irrelevant and that most of it was you, this makes more sense now, it did still seem weird as program output.
Also this is a lot of writing you've chosen to do manually, still so many games left and only so many ways to describe scoring a goal. Should be interesting, I will continue to read it all, just not with the intent of using pattern recognition to reverse engineer a program like it's a fun puzzle to be solved.

Since this isn't a traditional roleplay, would you prefer I move this thread to the Wonderful World of Wintreath (as this could be a casual RP), the RP Guild (as that's where your Darkest Dungeon story was, which this seems similar to), or the Amalyan Quarter (as this is also similar to HannahB's Choose Your Own Workplace Adventure)?

Honestly, I'm not sure. Darkest Dungeon was always going to be one story and I never even finished that. I'm hoping the Winteath Games could become a series. If it must be moved I suppose the RP Guild is the way to go.

Division 1, Round 2

Mathian Destroyers VS New Konstantinopolis Komodos

The Match
Welcome, everyone, to the Second Round! After such an exciting first round we are on track for a great game today! I'm your commentator for today, Rolph Ucdupt, here at the Malediction Stadium in New Ravensbridge! On the home side today the Math Mafia, the Mathian Destroyers! Right now, after the victory they enjoyed over the Southern Imperials, they are in the lead to advance to the next round. And up against them we have the New Konstantinopolis Komodos! We approached their coach for a statement and he said, and I quote, 'get out of my face before I give you new shoes'. Uhh, well, friendly guy....

...but nevermind that, the teams are forming up now! If the Mathians can achieve victory today they will assure their spot in the Semi-Finals! Lotta pressure on them today, especially with the number of fans on both sides here today! And the first whistle blows signalling the start of the game! The Komodos start first and are adopting a more cautious advance, methodical passing, the defenders are having trouble with this slow but steady advance and a pass to, wait, interception by the Mathians, great reading of the pass there!...

....and the Komodos goalkeeper keeps it out but gives the Mathians a corner kick! The Mathians are advancing to try and score here, with the Komodos having dominated possession so far this is the Mathians first chance to score. The Mathian Manager is giving instructions to his team, they've formed up with a grim look on their faces, ready to score. The Komodos are also gathered around the goal, the goalkeeper shouting orders to his team. The ref blows his whistle and the ball is passed...the Striker jumps, gets his head on the ball and SCORES! The Mathians have scored!....

...and the Komodos just do not give up with their careful approach, and now they seem to be in a dangerous position for the Mathians, the defenders are all over the place but cant seem to stop this attack, and the attacking midfielder breaks past his marker, its clear to the goal! He passes it to the striker, its on side, that was close! The striker shoots and the Goalkeeper keeps it out but its still in play! The midfielder slides if and its in! The Komodos have scored! It's the equalizer and they are still in the game!..

...after that exciting first half, I know I was on the edge of my seat the entire match, the Mathians are hoping to either snatch victory or at least get a draw but the Komodos must take home a victory to have a shot at advancing. So far the score is 1-1 all with the Komodos dominating possession but having trouble turning possession into goals. The Mathians are putting up a very determined defense now but seem to be lacking in the attack, with only 2 shots on goal. Can the dead lock be broken?...

...and again, the Komodos advance yet again! He's in the box and OHHH! He's down from a tackle by a Mathian defender! Poorly timed challenge there! The ref is coming up and its a yellow card but the ref has also awarded a penalty! The Mathians are arguing but the ref is having none of it! This could be the Komodos chance to get ahead if they can sink this penalty. It's one on one, striker verses goalkeeper, who will get the glory?...he shots and its IN! Goal for the Komodos and at such a late stage to! Can the Mathians recover from this?

....and the final whistle blows, signalling the end of the match at 1-2 for the Komodos! What an exciting game! Round 3 is certainly going to be interesting!

Mathian Destroyers:1 New Konstantinopolis Komodos:2

Division 2, Round 2

North Gralend Gold Hawks VS Intelligeneria Intellectuals

The Match
With a roar from the crowd as both teams take to the pitch, welcome to Okamura Stadium in Sunset Valley, I'm your commentator , Peter Tucker! Today's match looks to be promising as the North Gralend Gold Hawks face off against the Intelligeneria Intellectuals! Both teams are hoping for the victory, the Gold Hawks want to secure their place in the Semi-Finals while the Intellectuals hope that a victory today will help them secure their place instead! Who will win? Only one way to find out!

...And Max Power passes to Sanara, amazing pass, the defenders are nowhere to be seen! Sanara races down the right, lobs it to Liam Matthews who heads it into goal! Right past the outstretched fingers of the Gold Hawk goalkeeper! Amazing teamwork but no one seems more surprised than the Intellectuals! Fans cheering 'IntFooties, IntFooties!' over and over again! Liam Matthews has disappeared under his teammates as they celebrate the goal! Can the Intellectuals keep it up?....

..I asked earlier if the Intellectuals can keep up their performance and it seems they can. A free kick at 28 meters after a poorly timed slide tackle by Gold Hawk defender Paul Danger. Can the Intellectuals turn this into a goal? Sam Sanara readies up, he goes for the kick, it sails over the Northern players and into the hands of the Gold Hawk goalkeeper! Close catch to!...

...and Matthews keeps possession after that goal kick and advances down the middle, he's got 2 markers on either side of him and still he advances! He shoots from outside the box and its a Goal! Goal for the Intellectuals by Liam Matthews as the crowd goes wild again!...

...but dont count the North out yet, despite the current score, possession has slightly favored the North and now they seem more determined to attack. Here comes Northern striker Harvey Nelson down the left wing, shooting past the defenders, long pass over to Tom O'Malley, O'Malley in the box, and a short pass back to Nelson, amazing feint, Nelson shoots and its past the Goalkeeper, bounces off the crossbar and in for a Goal! With the score at 1-2 its half time...

....Both teams coming out with renewed vigor and zeal, the North hoping for one or two more goals, at least a draw, the Intellectuals taking that last Northern Goal as a wake up call, no room for complacency yet, and play continues!...

....it has been a very tumultuous second half, the North managed to claw another goal back to even things off at 2-2, both sides at the tip of their game, very tactical play but with 5 minutes left it looks to be all over. The Intellectuals are advancing down the left wing now, Ralph Fire passes it to Sam Sanara, the North putting up a defensive wall, markers on all players, Sanara kicks it back to Fire, Fire loses his marker passes to Sam Sanara again, finds his man, Sanara is in the box, can he score? He looks around, he's alone, he shoots and it goes into the hands of Northern goalkeeper Jackson Spurs. What a leap to catch that shot but catch it he did, the crowd cheering as the final whistle is blown! What a nail-biting finale with the score at 2-2 all!

Division 3, Round 2

Hinton Hounds VS Skyhelm Mountaineers

The Match
And we have an exciting match up for you today! I'm your commentator, Tohru Dojima at Inaba Stadium! The second round of Division 3 sees the Hinton Hounds, pride of Pogglind and their mascot Bucks up against the Geramundo guests, the Skyhelm Mountaineers! This will be the Hound's last chance to qualify for the Semi-finals, they must secure a victory here to even qualify! That determination shows as the tension in the crowd is electric, and the determination is equal on both sides with the Mountaineers absolutely set to put on a good show on their first match in the Games! Who shall come out on top today?

...the whistle blows, signifying the start, as the Hounds begin a steady attack down the left field, trying to get the ball forward but the Skyhelm defense is packed! An interception after a poorly placed pass puts possession back in the hands of the Mountaineers as they press this advantage, a fierce counter-attack by the striker right into the dangerzone! What a turn around as the Mountaineers take a shot...it bounces off the goalkeeper, he's kept it out but its still in play as the second striker poaches a shot and its in! Goal for Skyhelm! What a poachers goal, excellent placing by the Mountaineers!

....after another goal by the Mountaineers the Hounds have started a brutal attack, tackling the moment a Mountaineer gets the ball, masterful tackles but the attack just does not stop. The Skyhelm players have put up an excellent defense, however, and markers on all the key players make advancing a challenge, let alone scoring. Only one Hound shot on goal so far and it was gracefully stopped by the keeper. What's this? A well timed challenge by Skyhelm midfielder Fus Dorah has put the Hounds on the back foot with a Skyhelm counterattack bearing down on goal, its clear to the keeper, a shot at distance and I dont believe it, they score! 0-3 to the Mountaineers now!

...we return to, quite frankly, a bloodbath. The Hounds have put on a great fight but it simply is not enough. The Mountaineers have dominated this match, simply crushing all opposition, and it shows in the score line...

.....and its all over now, after another Mountaineer goal the ref blows the whistle, signaling the end of the match and of the Hound's hopes for victory. With the score 0-4 Skyhelm is triumphant.

Hinton Hounds:0 Skyhelm Mountaineers:4

Division 4, Round 2

Snow Turnips VS Luskan Lunatics

The Match
Welcome to the 2nd Round of Division 4, I'm your host, Mark Nutte, here at scenic Mona Stadium in the town of Valeria. Today we have quite the match for you with the Idantir Snow Turnips facing the Luskan Lunatics, a very apt name as most of the players are either certifiably insane or reformed criminals! I always love giving people second chances!

....with play beginning the Lunatics have adopted quite the eccentric play style and it seems to have caught the Turnips off guard. The Lunatics have charged into the box as the striker shoots with all her might as the Idantir keeper knocks it outta play for a corner kick! The Luskan striker is now.... attacking the ball.....uhhh, the Luskan coach is calming down the striker as the ref warns the Luskan midfielder to stop cackling madly and threatening the other players with 'her experiments'. Finally, the team is ready as the Luskan captain kicks into the jumble near the goal and into the hands of the Idantir goalkeeper! Close shot!...

....and the Turnips advance, every dime they spent on this new team really shows! The Lunatics eccentric play style seems to be a disadvantage at defending as the defenders try as they might to stop the Snow Turnips! The Luskan sweeper appears to be sleeping as she misses a tackle while another defender screams about 'reclaiming the relic from the heretics'! Unfortunately the Turnips push past the defense and into the danger zone as the star striker shoots and scores! The Luskan keeper is now scrubbing her net with a brush as the Lunatics prepare to counterattack!

...and we begin again after half time, the Turnips scored another goal but the Lunatics are not going down with out a fight! The Turnips have also sustained an injury as a midfielder had a minor mental breakdown after a Luskan defender gazed at him. Possession is roughly split as the Turnips begin an attack! They are soaring down the middle as the Lunatics attempt to stem this assault to no avail! The Turnips shoot, it bounces off the crossbar and into goal! Another score for the Turnips as the Luskan keeper breaks out her brush again!

...and that's the match! A valiant effort by the Lunatics but the Snow Turnips come out on top with the score at 3-0! Join us next time for the final match of Division 4!

0-3, somehow I feel like that's what I get for asking too many questions. Very obvious now that the text isn't computer generated anyway.

More good writing, next time I hope the RNG says my team wins just to see how the the text description plays out.

Division 1, Round 3

Southern Imperial Majestics VS New Konstantinopolis Komodos

The Match
Wait a day for some football, the weather is cloudy with some light rain but the officials have decided to carry on with the game. I'm Xander Corbus here at Ark Stadium. Today the Southern Imperial Majestics will face off against the New Konstantinopolis Komodos. This is the Imperials last chance for advancement to the Semi-Finals, even a draw here would knock them out, they must win and win big. The Komodos, on the other hand, have an easier time of it. Even a draw would secure their place in the Semi-Finals so victory today would just be a bonus. Which side will prevail in this final battle for Division 1?

The game begins in earnest as the Imperials attempt a quick advance, hoping to score before the other team knows what hit them! But a poorly placed pass has the Imperials on the back foot as the Komodos launch a swift counter-atttack! They advance before the Southern defense can close in on them and shoot...they score! What a quick turn around!

....and the whistle blows for half time, finally, a reprieve from the horror of this match for the Imperials as the score remains static at 0-5. Any chance of advancement seems to be gone as the crest fallen faces of the Imperials show.....

....And the Southern striker is taken down in the box! What a poorly timed tackle, that was almost malicious! The ref seems to agree as he gives the Komodos defender a red card and a penalty to the Imperials! This is their best chance to score and they know it. The look of concentration on the Imperial striker's face is intense, the crowd is silent, you could almost hear a pin drop......he moves in....he kicks...its in! The Imperials have finally scored in the 87th minute, bringing the scoreline to 1-8!

....and that's the match. A humiliating defeat for the Imperials as they walk away with damaged pride and a score of 1-8, the Komodos on the other hand ecstatic and it shows! The cheers of the crowd are deafening! What a spectacular result!

Southern Imperial Majestics:1 New Konstantinopolis Komodos:8

Division 2, Round 3

Most Holy Soccer Team VS Intelligeneria Intellectuals

The Match
And this is going to be quite a match, we have the final round for Division 2 with the Most Holy Team going up against the egghead footballers, the Intelligeneria Intellectuals! I'm Doug Teddie here at Alice Stadium! Final round of Division 3 and this is a battle to the end for the Holy tubers, no matter the result their journey will end here. However, they are determined to go out with a show and if anyone can put on a show its these holy rollers! The IntFooties, on the other hand, are in a battle to advance, they must score a victory and must score big to beat the Gold Hawks! Who shall walk away victorious?

This time the Holy Team seems to be fielding their best and brightest, no one over the age of 45 in sight! They have been training hard for this match and as the spudball is placed they look determined to take victory. The game begins with one heck of an aggressive attack by the spudballers as they weave around the IntFooties, who seem surprised by the suddenness of this attack! The Holy Team Striker manages to beat IntFootie defender Nate Carson with a feint and he's away with the ball, no one to stop him but Johnathan Marina as He finds himself in a one on one situation. The Holy striker points to the sky and strikes the ball with all his fury as it finds the back of the net! Its a goal in the first five minutes for the Holy Team!

....And its half time with no change in score, the spudballers have stopped almost all offensive action in favor of a packed Mediterranean style defense, one the IntFooties are having trouble beating. Just now, team captain Sam Sanara was distracted by a spudballer calling on the gods to smite him and was successfully tackled! Quite a strange yet effective play!

...And with a full 90 minutes up the match is over with the score at 1-0 for the Most Holy Soccer Team! They might not be advancing to the Semi-Finals but they gave us quite a match to mark their departure, as well as the Intelligeneria Intellectuals! They lost, but with grace and dignity as the captains shake hands, congratulating each other on a great game!

Most Holy Soccer Team:1 Intelligeneria Intellectuals:0

Division 3, Round 3

Skyhelm Mountaineers VS Imperial Eagles

The Match
Hello, everyone, I'm Jon Champion and we are here at the Risette Sports Stadium in good old Sunset City. Today, we have the final round of Division 3 and it is a dozy! Both teams, the Skyhelm Mountaineers and the Imperial Eagles, stand to advance to the Semi-Finals! This is a slam dunk, winner-take-all battle to the death for both these teams. They need to win to advance and they both know it, both taking to the field with a look of sheer determination! Who will walk away triumphant and who will walk away saying adios?

....The match begins as the Skyhelm Mountaineers launch a swift attack into the Eagles half but are quickly rebuked by the solid Imperial defense! It's tiki-taka in the midfield as tackle after interception keeps both teams from scoring! Most of the play is happening in the midfield with both teams struggling to make headway!

....And that's the first half with no scores for either side! It was a brutal battle but a bloodless one with no injuries or cards so far. A few fouls and free kicks but nothing malicious. Will anyone score in the second half?

....Play resumes as both teams remain at 0 all! Both teams aggressively attempting to drive into the other's half! Will this deadlock be broken? So far the answer seems to be a negative as interception after interception leads to a stalemate!

....Free kick is awarded to the Skyhelm Mountaineers after an interception gone wrong by the Eagles. The team captain kicks deep into Eagle territory as the second striker manages to keep possession! He has an opening and by jove he's going for it at full speed as the defenders struggle to try and intercept! One defender manages to tackle and...ohh! The attacking midfielder from the Mountaineers manages to intercept and steal possession! He keeps the attack alive and shoots from outside the box! Ahh, but the Eagle goalkeeper manages to block the shot and knocks it away.... but the second striker comes in and heads the ball...its in! Goal for the Skyhelm Mountaineers! With scoring open at 1-0 at such a late stage in the game will the Eagles be able to equalize?

.....And that's the full ninety minutes, what a nerve-racking match all the way to the end, I know I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through! But with the score at 1-0 for the Skyhelm Mountaineers the match is over! The Mountaineers will be advancing to face the North Gralend Gold Hawks! Thanks for watching and see you next time!

Division 4, Round 3

Luskan Lunatics VS Penguinia Patriots

The Match
This is it, everyone, the final match, the end goal, the last of the qualifiers! I'm Andy O'Brian here at the Letterman Stadium with the match to end Division 4. The Luskan Lunatics face off against the Penguinia Patriots as the patriots attempt to qualify for the semi-finals! The Lunatics, on the other hand, cannot qualify and are simply hoping for a decent performance before bowing out of the tournament. Who shall proceed and who shall emerge victorious?

The game begins with a pretty cautious Luskan approach, after their last game, the team seems to be a lot more careful and meticulous in their attack. The Patriots are being the exact opposite with a incredibly aggressive as they try to win the ball back and dominate possession but the more controlled team before them is making any chance of advancement slim to none! It's going to be a deadlock unless someone breaks through...

.....with the whistle blowing its half time and nil all! It's the classic match of aggression versus a carefully planned game. Neither side seem set to break this deadlock yet which is bad news for the Patriots. Victory needed to be swift and merciless for them to proceed. And now, a word from our sponsor, McDaniels!....

....It's been 76 minutes played and no goals, both teams are fatigued at this point and it shows plainly now, sloppy mistakes on both sides and one in particular on the Luskan side as the Patriots launch a fast attack, halfway to the goal before the Lunatics know what happened! The defenders are trying to close the gap but the Patriots take the shot at distance! The Goalkeeper is there, however, and its out for a corner kick!

....The players are jostling next to goal as both sides try to find an advantageous position as the Patriot player shoots into the mess....the Luskan defender manages to head it away but its now in possession of a Patriot who shoots and scores! Its 0-1 for the Patriots!

...But alas, to little to late as the game ends at 0-1 for the Patriots. Even though victory was achieved on the pitch it was not overall as they are knocked out. A splendid match from all sides but with that, the Semi-Finals are now in play!

Semi-Finals Bracket 1

New Konstantinopolis Komodos VS Snow Turnips

The Match
Welcome to the Semi-Finals! Its been a long road from where we began, 12 teams, 4 Divisions and now only 4 left, trying to reach the Finals! Today we have the New Konstantinopolis Komodos facing off against Idantir's best, the Snow Turnips! I'm Adachi Shido here at Shibuya Stadium. The Turnips made it here by the skin of their teeth, barely beating out the Penguina Patriots on Goal Differences. The Komodos, however, were Division Champions, winning both of the matches they played in. Today is going to be quite the match as both sides know that with a winner take all attitude, no mercy will be given today.

...match begins with the Komodos launching a lighting attack down the right wing, something the Komodos are known for, and with a lob to the center the attacking midfielder manages to head it into goal! 10 minutes in and the Komodos scores! They look pleased as they retreat back to their half and the crowd certainly is happy! The Snow Turnips line up in the center as the ref blows and they come back at the Komodos equally hard! It is a spectacular attack as the Komodos defenders race to try and block the Snow advance but fails to intercept in time as the Snow Turnips are past the defense! Nothing except the goal keeper in the way! The striker stops, points at a corner in the net and absolutely slams it home, a goal for the Turnips and an equalizer! This is becoming quite the match!

...half time comes with the Turnips having scored twice more, bringing the score to 1-3! They have been dominating possession as the Komodos struggles to intercept masterful passes from the Turnips! Lets see what the 2nd half will bring....

.....and the ref blows for full time! With another 2 goals in the second half the Turnips bring their lead up to 1-5! They have sealed their place in the Finals and done it in style to!

Semi Finals Bracket 2

North Gralend Gold Hawks VS Skyhelm Mountaineers

The Match
Welcome to the 2nd and final Semi Finals! This will be the final match before the Finals, the one that will decide who goes home and who gets the glory! I'm Gary Garrettson here at Garrus Stadium. This match will have the North Gralend Gold Hawks up against the Skyhelm Mountaineers! Both these teams clawed their way out of the qualifiers and now eye the Finals hungrily! Who will go forth and who will go to face the Komodos for the 3rd place position?

The ref blows his whistle and the game begins in earnest! The Gold Hawks move the ball around the midfield, hoping for a quick and easy way through but ohhh! Interception by the Mountaineers! They have the ball and are making a break for it! The Gold Hawk Defense closes ranks and blocks all advancement! This is looking to be a stalemate as the Mountaineers maintain possession while the Gold Hawks block their probes!

....finally, at last, the Mountaineers break through and go for goal, they make a play for a short pass to the center but an interception by the central defender puts possession back with the Gold Hawks! They shoot deep into the midfield and manage to find their mark as attacking midfielder Tohru Bosun makes a break through the thin Mountaineer defense! He weaves around the resistance and its him and the goalkeeper! He shoots...back of the net, score for the Gold Hawks!

The Mountaineers attempt a counter attack but the wind has been knocked out of their sails as they lose possession again! The Gold Hawks shoot down the center like a missile as they leave the Mountaineer defense scrambling! It's a repeat as its down to the Striker and the Goalkeeper! He shoots...he scores! The Gold Hawks have scored again leaving the scoreline at 2-0!

And the final whistle of the final Semi-Final blows bringing this bombastic battle to a brave end! With a score of 2-0 the Gold Hawks take home the victory and proceed to the Finals to face the Snow Turnips! Thank you for watching and for out sponsors.....

3rd Place Finisher

New Konstantinopolis Komodos VS Skyhelm Mountaineers

The Match
All the preamble, all the excitement and all the fanfare has led us to this point, the penultimate showdown for 3rd place! I'm Magnolia Kleo here in lovely Tropico Stadium and we have the Komodos facing off against the Mountaineers! They were defeated by the Turnips and the Gold Hawks respectively but both know well enough there is still glory to be had. Neither side seems willing to go down without a fight!

....after the unexpected defeat of the Komodos they most certainly have stepped up their game! An aggressive attack has given them a goal in the first 15 minutes and having reclaimed possession from the Mountaineers they begin again as they press down the field. The Mountaineers seem more subdued today as their style is decidedly less aggressive then previous games. The Komodos push down the left wing, a rare move for the team usually stronger on the right, as they masterfully set up a shot on goal and....carry it through! Its a goal for the Komodos!

....with the end of the first half of the match setting the score at 3-0 for the Komodos they seem poised to claim victory from the Mountaineers. Will the Mountaineers push back in the next 45 minutes and level the playing field or even snatch victory from the Komodos?

.....the final whistle blows, bringing the 3rd Place Finisher to a close! With the score at 5-0 for the Komodos they have taken the 3rd place podium, not a minor accomplishment with 12 other teams vying for that position! Now, only one match remains, one final battle, coming up soon.....

The Finals

Snow Turnips VS North Gralend Gold Hawks

The Match
This is it! 15 Matchs, 15 games, 12 teams and it all comes down to this! The Finals of The Wintreath Games! The Idantir Snow Turnips versus The North Gralend Gold Hawks! I'm Tohru Adachi and this is Wintreath Stadium! Both teams are taking to the pitch now as they prepare for the fight of their lives!

The Snow Turnips begin the game with a slow and steady approach as they masterfully pass the ball down field. The Gold Hawk defense attempts to intercept but the Turnips just pass the ball away, beautiful gameplay as the Snow Turnips try and find their mark and...oh! The Gold Hawks intercept, they charge down the field as quickly as they can, attempting to get to to goal as soon as possible! The striker makes a shot at distance, its off the crossbar for a goal kick!

Half time now with the score static at 0-0! Will we decide this match on penalties? Only one way to find out!

The Gold Hawks attempt another bum rush to goal as the second half begins, a very quick offensive style for the Gold Hawks and a more measured approach for the Turnips. An interception by the Snow Turnips, I guess a measured approach has advantages! The Snow Tunips now take the chance to charge as they get to goal in close to a minute! It's just the striker and the goalkeeper! He shoots and the goalkeeper has it out for a corner kick!

The Snow Turnips preparing for the corner, all hands on deck now. The ball is kicked into the frenzy next to goal, a rush of heads and hands and there it is, the ball, its struck.........

.......into the back of the net! Goal for the Snow Turnips! Goal for the Snow Turnips! The score now at 1-0! Can the Gold Hawks equalize?

...with 90 minutes played, the match, the tournament and the Wintreath Games are over! The Idantir Snow Turnips stand victorious at 1-0, beating out all competition to claim the title as the best in Wintreath! What an amazing journey!

Interesting how much was random vs. how much was determined by the skill inputs.
A table of all 16 games, by difference in input skill, and difference in points, with a negative value being an "upset", would look like this:

0.29 +7
0.25 -1
0.21 +1
0.15 +5
0.14 +4
0.11 -1
0.11  0
0.09 -4
0.09 +1
0.08 +1
0.08 +1
0.08  0
0.05 -1
0.03 -4
0.03 -2
0.03 +3

Multiple upsets when there was little difference, and a few even when there were. 6 out of 16 games were won by the team with a lower skill input, only 8 out of 16 were won by the team with higher skill, with no games where there was no skill difference as the Hinton Hounds and Luskan Lunatics never played each other.

Sometimes the underdog just gets lucky, or the team you expect to win has a bad day. I've watched enough professional League of Legends games to see that happen more often than I would have otherwise thought.

But I guess that's what keeps people excited. :P
