Title: Regional Town of Salem Games?
Post by: Mathyland on July 07, 2017, 05:37:06 AM
I recently thought of the idea of regional Town of Salem Games. If you don't know, Town of Salem (http://blankmediagames.com/TownOfSalem/) is a game that's basically like the game Mafia (or Werewolf), but has a lot more roles and complexity. It's not that difficult to learn how to play, however (although it's a lot easier after you play each role at least once so you know how all of them work). It may not be the easiest game to learn how to play well, but it's a heck of a lot easier than learning how to play Civ V well and requires less patience :P.

I thought of this idea because it is a free-to-play game that just requires an internet browser (which you probably have if you're reading this :P), and you can play it with a private group as well as a public match. It doesn't require lots of planning and hours of time to set up a game and play it, and it can be played any time with a group of any size. Although, a smaller group would require that we join a public game, but that's not too much of a problem. There's also a friends system, which would help.

Does anyone have any opinions on if this is a good idea or not?

P.S. If anybody decides to register for a Town of Salem account because of this thread, could you please put my username, "Mathness" in the "referrer" box? Also, at the beginning of each game, you pick a nickname that is the only name used for that entire game, so you don't need to have your forum name as your username.

I'd be up for it. I'll need to have a re-read of the wiki (http://town-of-salem.wikia.com/wiki/Town_of_Salem_Wiki:Main_Page) though since I haven't played in months, and I'll need to stay awake fairly late from my perspective. =P

...I should play ToS again. I've missed the censor. It's tarnation hilarious.

Since we probably won't have enough people for a regular match, are we just going to join a public match together?

Anyone who wants to, say your username in this thread, and I'll put it in the OP.

Cool idea. How many people are required for a game?

I think the bare minimum is 7, while the usual is 15. With 7, it would be a custom game where the host chooses which roles are in play, and that can be fun. 15 is the max and is usually how many people are in a public game.

My username's BetaSoup.

I haven't played since Blackmailers gained the ability to see whispers, so I'm very out of date, apparently.

Also, temporarily, spies can't see whispers or mafia chat; they can only see where mafia visit.

And there's the whole coven thing, but idk much about that other than the fact that I'm not spending $5 on it.

If the Steam version is compatible with the website, and I imagine it probably is. I don't think everyone wants to spend $5 when they could just play the free version that doesn't have much difference.

I have the Steam version, but I've never played it before. I think it came as part of a bundle.

They're absolutely compatible. I bought it, a friend didn't, and we both could still join the same game.

Do we want to have organized games where we set a date and time that we're going to play, or do we want to all friend each other and just play whenever we want to? Or a mix of both?

I like the mix idea because I don't think an organized game where everyone's schedule gives them time to participate will happen very often.

A mix of both would be good. Like saying, "Hey, pop online around this time (each XYZ?) and we'll see if we have enough players."

I actually created an account, connected it to my Steam, and 'received my Steam rewards'.

So I guess I'm Winterm00t on there. :)

Yeah, Steam version just makes it so you can download the game. You still have to log in to your Blank Media account
Speaking of which, count me in. TriforceP

I've been hesitant since I saw this. This type of game is always interesting. Unfortunately, the type of community that plays this game often ends up being toxic. I still remember this one website for Mafia games where it's like "You didn't do exactly what the long detailed offsite guide/script says? Reported for game throwing, 3 day ban. Permanent ban if you don't do exactly what we expect again." Really ruins the fun when you end up with people like that, who end up with more authority just by being there the longest, probably due to chasing away anyone who would play the game for fun (what a strange concept).
Is the Town of Salem community better? Or alternately, are you all able to do this without having strangers join in who will insist that we play the game their way? I'd just like to be able to join a real game, not listen to greifers who will attempt to report you and get you banned for not being a robot, I've been through that and it wasn't really any fun. I definitely don't want to spend money on the Steam version if there's a chance that other players will report the new player just as a scapegoat for them losing.

Spoilered for Length
You don't need to buy the game, the website lets you play for free and there's no difference between the two (except getting more coins to spend on cosmetics). Plus the "hyper robot players" are shuttled off into their own area called "Ranked" games. Plus there are sufficient players that you really can't have authority via age. Furthermore if we get at least 7 players, we would be able to play without strangers.

That said, there is a lot of trends and conventions that Town of Salem follows. The wiki goes into more details, but there are things like using acronyms for different roles ("surv" for Survivor, "invest" for Investigator, "vh" for Vampire Hunter...) and things like "spam click votes to denote you have been blackmailed" and "Copy-paste your will to prove yourself as your role" and (at least before it was updated) "if you are the Disguiser don't touch anything because this role is made of failure."

Finally, the community itself... personally, I find most are a little too "lol random" in humour and a little too "text speak" in dictation. It's been a long time since I played, so I don't know if it is better or worse, plus I seem to be faster at typing than other players so I may be (read: am definitely) holding them to higher standards. But I don't think anyone will report new players for losing and not knowing how-to, especially since when there are reports the transcript of the game is looked at to determine if the reporting was justified.

Personally, I'd advise watching some YouTube videos and see if you would want to play before investing anything into it. (I recommend Minx or the Derp Crew, since a lot of YouTubers don't play the game properly and instead spend time mucking around).

I'm not sure how I want to go about deciding on a time for this. I don't want to set a time too far in the future, but I also don't want to set a time to close to now.

Anyways, I don't really have any good times to play in the near future, but if anyone else wants to set a time, just mention everyone who has expressed interest.

Right. Ok.

Seven hours from now when I get home again, I'll open up ToS on my browser, and check up every five or so minutes. I'll mention everyone when I'm actually home (assuming the bus doesn't crash or (more likely) it gets caught in traffic). I may play a few games to try adapt to all the everything too.

We'll most likely be having a ToS game night during the Summersend Festival, too. If anyone hasn't played it before, though, it's really fast-paced, so it might be a good idea to get some practice beforehand.

So, that was fun. And by fun, I mean "Oh dear gosh, ahhhh, why does my luck suck so much." We played through three games in total, and I died in them all and won at one.

Game 1, Mathy and I played a Classic game. Due to technical difficulties and Mathy only having time for one game, we ended up starting the game without Crushita (Sorry Crush!). I was given the delightful role of jailor. Fun fact: I am terrible at concentrating when I'm jailor. Too many things happening. It is my least favourite role in the game. That said, this time I managed to execute a mafia member (because they claimed jester... not a great plan, all things considered). Town won that game, and for the life of me I can't recall what role Mathy had.

Game 2, Mathy tapped out and Crushita tapped in. It also turns out that the Town of Salem censor does not permit the typing of Crushita's name. I think you can guess why. It turned out as "flummery" which while amusing, lacks a distinct thing known as Capitalisation. Again, I had jailor. Unlike in the previous game while I used my own username as my in-game nickname, Crushita used Karl Marx. Unknown to me, Crushita was Godfather, and successfully tricked the town (and myself before I was unceremoniously killed) into hanging the escort... and then moving onwards to win the game. Amusingly, Crushita held off from the potatoe communism taunts until after my death.

Game 3, our last game, I died first out of everyone. I was part of the mafia and had my head bitten off by the local werewolf. Also our mafia kiiiiinda self destructed due to the only killing role being jailed a few nights in a row. I called myself "elephant" and Crushita went by "The Queen" (presumably of potatoes, but you didn't hear me say that. You know. Since I was dead.). The Queenly spy, marshaling her spy-corgis, successfully won the day. And by that, I mean the town won, in spite of the local mayor exposing himself on the first day. I guess that's why you need a queen, hm?

Anyway, while that was fun I would immensely prefer if we had sufficient players to have our own room next time, since the lack of grammar and logic was physically painful. Also, I would like to not die next time! I died in every game! Am I just that killable? Actually, don't answer that.

With more notice, I would have liked to join.

The most important lesson I'm getting from that description, is that there may be a tactical advantage to picking a username that consists only of words that will be censored.
